Not For Profit Fundraising

by admin on September 29, 2008

The process of solicitation and gathering of money in the form of cash or kind, through donations obtained from individuals, corporates, charitable foundations or government agencies is known as Fundraising. This process of fundraising is typically associated with the efforts that the non-profit organizations undertake.

There can be a wide array of operations that they are concerned with, they can be religious organizations, political groups, and philanthropic groups that are engaged in research and public broadcasters. The charitable organizations that engage in fundraising cater to humanitarian concerns, disaster relief, human rights, and merit awards in the form of student scholarship to the academic achievers or athletes and other social issues.

Well, the process of successful fundraising is somewhat shrouded in mystery. A proven track record is necessary in order to raise money. So, development officers with a background of managing major annual campaigns or soliciting large donations are always in demand.

There are certain criteria that need to be followed while raising funds that are non-profitable:

•    The organization must prove to the people who are supporting it that it is actually delivering its purpose and it is working for the betterment of the community.
•    Successful fundraising is never an instantaneous process. It is hard work that requires design and concept followed by proper execution and assessment.
•    Fundraising is very akin to raising friends. People should know you and like you in order to support you.
•    The organization might be good and their service worthy of its ideals but these requires effective marketing. People need to be convinced of your worth in order to donate. This can be ensured from efficient ‘selling’ of your ideals and staff/members.
•    The professional development officers do not ask for money, they design and manage the campaign in such a manner that the request for donation comes from within the prospects peer group.
